| Transciption: | Marlborough Times Dated Saturday 13th February 1909 The late Mr. R. G. Robinson. – The death occurred on Thursday, in Charing Cross Hospital, after an operation of Mr. Robert George Robinson of Sarum House, Enborne-road. The body was brought to Newbury for interment, on Wednesday last. A funeral service was conducted in the Primitive Methodist Church, Bartholomew-street, by the Rev. J. Neville, and was attended by a number of teachers and scholars from the Wash Common School, with which the deceased was associated. The service was concluded at the Cemetery. The mourners were Mrs Robinson (widow), Mr. M. Robinson (son), Misses Edith, Elsie and Lillie Robinson (daughters), Mrs M. Robinson (daughter-in-law), Messrs William and John Robinson (brothers), G. Holdup and W. Bull (brothers-in law), Mrs Dance (sister-in-law) and her daughter. A number of wreaths were sent by relatives and friends. |

Robert George Robinson
1856-1909
Robert George, his parents, siblings and early life:
Robert George was born in Potbridge, Hampshire, in 1856, the son of Cornelius and Hannah Robinson (nee Fox) who were married on the 25th December 1852, in Chisledon, Wiltshire.
His father Cornelius was born on the 14th February 1828, he was baptised on the 1st March 1828 in Chisledon, Wiltshire, the son of Joseph and Mary Robinson (nee Osman) who were married on the 19th February 1821, in Chisledon.
His mother Hannah was born on the 8th December 1828, she was baptised on the 4th January 1829, in Chisledon, the daughter of Thomas and Martha Fox (nee Williams) who were married on the 5th March 1818, in Wroughton, Wiltshire.
Cornelius and Hannah also had the following children:
Joseph, born 1854, in Winchfield, baptised 9th Sept. 1855, (methodist, in Micheldever, Hants)
Thomas, born 1857, in Winchfield, baptised May 1858, (methodist, in Micheldever, Hants))
Elizabeth, born c1860, in Winchfield
Charles, born 1862, in Winchfield
John, born 1st October 1864, in Winchfield, baptised 25th December 1869 in Chisledon
William, born 9th June 1867, in Chisledon, baptised 25th December 1869 in Chisledon
Martha Anne, born 2nd July 1869, in Chisledon, baptised 25th December 1869 in Chisledon
In 1861 Cornelius (33), a Labourer, Hannah (33) and their children, Joseph (6), Robert (4), Thomas (3) and Elizabeth (1), were recorded living in Winchfield, Hampshire.
Robert in later life:
In 1871 Robert was recorded working as a General Servant, living in London Street, Wroughton, Wiltshire (ancestry have his age as 17, familysearch.org have his age as 13, the census image is hard to read so could even be 15)
The 1881 census records Robert (24) as a Baker, lodging at 32 Gt. Knollys Street, Reading, Berkshire.
Robert married Eliza Holdup in 1882 (marriage registered in Newbury)
(Eliza was born c1857, in Kingsclere, Hampshire, the daughter of William and Charlotte Holdup (nee Batt) who were married in Kingsclere in 1851)
Robert George and Eliza had the following children, all born in Newbury:

A male child 1887, (died 1887, without being named, buried in the NRC on the 7th January).

In 1891 Robert (34), a Baker, Eliza (34), Montague George, (9), Edith Annie (6) and Elsie Beatrice (9 months) were recorded living at Sarum House Shop, Enborne Road, Newbury.
The 1901 census records Robert (44) as a Baker and Shopkeeper. He was still living in Sarum House, with Eliza (44) and their children, Montague George (18) a Carpenter’s Apprentice, Edith Annie (16) a Dressmaker’s Apprentice, Elsie Beatrice (10) and Lilian Maud (2).
The 1907 Kelly’s Directory Robert George as a Baker & Grocer, at Sarum House, Enborne Road.
Robert George died aged 52, on the 4th February 1909, in Charing Cross Hospital, London, after an operation. His body was brought to Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th February.
The 1911 census records Eliza (54) as a Grocer/Baker/Bread Maker/Shopkeeper, at Sarum House. Her daughters Elsie (20) and Lily (12) were living with her. Elsie was assisting in the business.
Eliza was again recorded as a Baker/Shopkeeper in 1921, she was recorded living at 20 Enborne Road, Newbury with her daughter Elsie (30), who was recorded as a Shop Assistant, employed by her mother.
Eliza died aged 80, on the 15th January 1838. At the time of her death, she was living with her married daughter Elsie Beatrice Tull and her family, in Redcross Road, Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest on the 19th January, with her husband Robert George.
