Charles Stone

1865-1908

Charles Joseph, born 1865, in Marsh Benham, Berkshire, the son of Charles and Caroline Stone (nee Wheeler) who were married on the 28thDecember 1863, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire.

His father Charles was born c1825, in Sidney, Australia. The son of Joseph and Ann Stone. (Ann was Irish). Charles died aged 61, in 1884. He was buried on the 19thDecember, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.

His mother Caroline was baptised on the 8thOctober 1826, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Joseph (a Carpenter) and Jane Wheeler (nee Hall) who were married on the 3rdOctober 1825, at St James the Less, Pangbourne, Berkshire. Caroline died aged 85, in the Newbury Infirmary in 1912. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5thFebruary.

Charles and Caroline also had a daughter, Jane born in 1867, in Woodspeen, Berkshire.

In 1871 Charles (47), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Caroline (42), Jane (2), Charles (6), and his grandmother Ann Stone (75), were living in Woodspeen Road, Woodspeen, Berkshire.

The 1881 census records Charles (56) a General Labourer, Caroline (53), Charles (15), a General Labourer/Servant and Jane (13), living in Woodspeen, Berkshire.

In 1891 Charles (25), was working as an Agricultural Labourer. He was still living in Woodspeen, with his mother Caroline (64), who was working as a Laundress.

Charles married Emily Jane Bailey in 1897 (marriage registered in the June quarter, in Newbury)

(Emily Jane was born on the 29thJanuary 1868, in Inkpen, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Bailey (nee Taylor) who were married on the 19thJuly 1864, at St Michael, Inkpen, Berkshire)

Charles and Emily had the following children:

William John Stone, born c1898, in Woodspeen, Berkshire. (died aged 7, buried in the NRC on the 1stNovember 1905)

Mabel Jane, born 1899, in Denford, Berkshire

Charles Augustus, born 1902 (died aged 10 months, buried 4th March 1903, at St Lawrence, Hungerford)

Ethel, born 1904

Bertha Louisa, born 1906, in Newbury

In 1901 Charles (35), a Market Gardener, Emily (33), William (3) and Mabel (1), were recorded living in Bath Road, Hungerford, Berkshire.

Charles died aged 42, in the Newbury Workhouse, on the 31stJuly 1908. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the on the 3rdAugust.

Emily after her husband’s death:

The 1911 census records Emily working as a Cook, for the Speen Vicarage, Newbury for the Rev. Robert Bruce Dickson. Her daughters Ethel (7) and Bertha (4) were recorded boarding at 1, Essex Place, Speen, with a Sarah Ann Martin (54) and a Jane Lewendon (70). Her daughter Mabel Jane (11) was recorded living in an Orphanage at 6 Elm Grove, Wimbledon, Surrey.

Emily was still working for the Rev. Robert Bruce Dickson, at Speen Vicarage when the 1921 was taken.

Sometime between 1921 and 1939 Rev. R. B. Dickson left Newbury and Emily went with him, (as a domestic servant) as the 1939 register records them living in ? Lodge, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Rev. R. B. Dickson died the following year.

By 1949 Emily was living at 3 Junction Terrace, Hambridge Road, Newbury. She was still living at 3 Junction Terrace in 1955, where she died aged 87, on the 12thMarch.
