Albert Edward Hill
Albert Edward Hill (1870 – 1908)
Albert Edward Hill was born in 1870 in Newbury, the son of Charles and Harriet, nee Richardson, Hill. In the 1871 census Albert, aged 8 months, was recorded with his parents and four siblings in Northbrook Street in Newbury, his father Charles was a groom. Ten years later in the 1881 census Albert was again recorded his parents and six siblings at 2 Gilbert Court in Newbury, Albert was recorded as a scholar while Charles was a gardener.
Albert joined the army on 18 November 1889 at Reading declaring he was 18 years old and 9 months old and subsequently served as a private in the Royal Berkshire Regiment. On signing up he was recorded as 5 foot 5 inches tall & 120 pounds. He had a tattoo of a dancing woman astride an anchor on the inside of his right forearm. His previous occupation was recorded as a chimney sweep. His next of kin was recorded as his father Charles Hill of East Fields Newbury. Altogether he served nearly 13 years before being discharged on 3 November 1902. On leaving he was given a gratuity under the demobilisation regulations. His service record indicates he had many postings as below:-

Bermuda 4 March 1893 to 1 December 1895
Halifax, Nova Scotia 2 December 1895 to 8 December 1896
United Kingdom 9 December 1896 to 9 February 1900
Gibraltar 10 February 1900 to 26 October 1902
United Kingdom 27 October 1902 to 3 November 1902
Albert died July 1908 at Newbury Union Workhouse and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 27 July 1908.
Albert’s mother Harriet Hill was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 28 April 1928. In addition, four of his siblings were also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, Annie Maria aged 4 on 23 January 1877, Alice aged 17 months on 17 September 1880, John aged 53 on 14 October 1921 and Frank aged 49 on 9 May 1922.
