Azubah Ann (Annie) Poulton
1836-1908
Azubah, her parents, siblings and early life:
Azubah Ann was born on the 13thAugust 1836, She was baptised on the 9thOctober 1836, at Little Waltham, Independent, Essex, the daughter of Alfred and Rebecca Smee (nee Lyndsell) who were married on the 20thJuly 1819, at St Martin, Little Waltham, Essex
Azubah’s father Alfred was born on the 2ndSeptember 1796, he was baptised on the 15thDecember 1822, at Little Waltham, Independent, Essex, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Smee (nee Brewer) who were married in December 1787, in Great Waltham, Essex. (Alfred was baptised at the same time as his son Joseph and his daughter Sarah, see below)
Azubah’s mother Rebecca was born c1797, in Weathersfield, Essex.
Alfred and Rebecca also had the following children baptised at Little Waltham, Independent:
Joseph, born 24th October 1819, baptised 15thSeptember 1822
Sarah, born 31stJuly 1822, baptised 15thSeptember 1822
Eunice, born 26thMarch 1826, baptised 14th December 1826
Rebecca, born 2ndFebruary 1828, baptised 29thMarch 1828
Lucretia Lois, born 26thApril 1833, baptised 9thMarch 1824
The 1841 census records Alfred (45), as a Storehouseman, living in Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex, with Rebecca (40) and their children, Sarah (15), Eunice (15), Rebecca (10), Lucretia (5) and Azubah (4).
Alfred died aged 52, in 1848, in Chelmsford.
In 1851 Azubah (14), a Dressmaker’s Apprentice, was living in King’s Street, Chelmsford, with her widowed mother Rebecca (54).
The 1861 census records Azubah (24), a Dressmaker, living in Chapel Place, Chelmsford, with her mother Rebecca (61) and her sisters, Sarah (38), a Dressmaker and Rebecca (33), a School Mistress.
Azubah’s mother died aged 69, in 1866, in Chelmsford.
Azubah in later life:
Azubah (name recorded as Azeebah Anne) married Walford Poulton in 1870, in Chelsea.
(Walford was born in 1840, in Great Bentley Essex, the son of William and Susannah Poulton (nee Mountford) who were married on the 24thDecember 1830, at Maldon All Saints and St Peter, Essex).
Walford and Azubah had the following children:
Annie Kathleen, born 1870 (died of croup aged 4 years 4 months, on the 3rdMarch 1875. Death registered as Annie Cathleen. Buried in the NRC, on the 6thMarch, as Annie Catherine)
Walford James, born 1872
Azubah Madeline, born 1873
Mountford Archer, born c1876
Florence Kathleen, born 1878
The 1871 census records Walford (30), a Grocer’s Assistant & Teacher, Azubah (34) and their daughter Annie Kathleen (0), living in Woodspeen, Berkshire.
By 1881 the family were living in Greenham Street, Greenham, Berkshire as follows: Walford (40), a Grocer Partner, Azubah (44) a Dressmaker employing four assistants, Walford (9), Azubah (7), Mountford (5) and Florence (2).
The 1891 census records Walford (50) as a Grocer’s Traveller, living at 56 Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Azubah (54), a Dressmaker, Walford (19), a Grocer’s Assistant, Azubah (17), Mountford (15), a Solicitor’s Clerk and Florence (12).
In 1901, Walford (60) was recorded as a Butcher Shopkeeper, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Azubah (63), a Dressmaker, Mountford (25) a Draper’s Assistant and Azubah (27) and Florence (22), both Dressmakers.
Azubah Annie died aged 72, on the 26thApril 1908, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30thApril.
The 1911 census records Walford (70), living at 26, Craven Street, Newbury, with his children, Azubah Madeline (36) a Dressmaker, Mountford Archer (35), a Draper’s Assistant and Florence Kathleen (32), a Grocer’s Clerk.
Walford (81) and his children, Walford James (49), a Grocer’s Manager and Florence Kathleen (42), a Grocer’s Clerk, were still living at 26, Craven Street, in 1921. Both children were working for a Grocer, Brice Gould, at 37, Bartholomew Street.
Walford died aged 90, c1931, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rdJanuary.
