Elizabeth Eleanor Atlee

1845-1908

Elizabeth Eleanor born 17th August 1845. She was baptised on the 30th September 1845, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of George (a Chemist and Druggist) and Mary Ann Atlee (nee Brownie) who were married on the 17th February 1838, in Hillingdon, Middlesex.

Elizabeth’s father George was born on the 11th April 1813, he was baptised on the 2nd May 1813 at the Newbury Upper Meeting House (Presbyterian), the son of Daniel and Mary Atlee (nee Dibley) who were married on the 18th November 1805, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

Her mother Mary Ann was baptised on the 26th June 1814, in Uxbridge, Middlesex, the daughter of Wrightson Ward and Elizabeth Brownie (nee Atkins) who were married on the 4th January 1806, in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.

Elizabeth’s siblings were:

Daniel Wrightson, born 9th September 1838, baptised 6th October 1838, in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. (died aged 13 in 1852, buried 13th January, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen)

Helen Sophia born on the 6th November 1847, in Newbury, Berkshire, baptised on the 26th December 1847, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

In 1841 George (25), Mary (20) and their son Daniel (2), were living in Speen, Berkshire.

The 1851 census records George (37) as an Annuitant, living in Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire with Mary (33), Daniel (12), Elizabeth (5), Helen (3), a visitor and a general servant. (Surname recorded as Atley on ancestry)

George died aged 44, in September 1858, in Woodspeen, Berkshire, he was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Speen on either the 13th or 18th September.

The 1861 census records Mary (44) as an Annuitant, living at The Crescent, Shaw Road, Speenhamland, Berkshire, with Elizabeth (15), Helen (13), a boarder, a visitor and a servant.

Elizabeth’s mother continued to live in Shaw Crescent until her death in 1893, She died aged 79 on the 27th May, and was buried on the 30th May, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.

In 1871 Elizabeth (25) was recorded visiting James and Caroline Newman in Shipton Lee, Quainton, Buckinghamshire. (Surname recorded as Allee on ancestry)

The 1881 census records Elizabeth as Eleanor E. Atlee (34), a Govenress/Private Teacher, visiting the Reverend Hezekiah Martin and his family, at Thatcham House, Station Road, Thatcham, Berkshire.

 

The 1901 census records Elizabeth Eleanor (55), visiting her married sister Helen Adams (53) and her husband Thomas Adams (68), at Grange Farm, Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire. 

Her widowed sister Helen Sohpia died aged 59 on the 4th June 1907, at Collosseum Terrace, St Pancras, London. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th June.

Elizabeth Eleanor died the following year, on the 8th March. She was laid to rest with her sister Helen Sophia, on the 11th March 1908.

Probate: ATLEE Elizabeth Eleanor of 2 St Annes Craven-street Newbury Berkshire spinster died 11th March 1908 Probate Oxford 27th May to Walter William Penfold draper and William Ryall outfitter. Effects: £8424 2s 5d

(Although Elizabeth Eleanor’s sister Helen Sophia died in London, she lived at 2 St Annes Craven-street. Her probate record records her Effects as £8970 19s 10d. After Helen’s death Elizabeth Eleanor also lived at 2 St Annes Craven-street. As both women left in excess of £8000, Elizabeth Eleanor was probably the main beneficiary of Helen’s will)
