Sarah Floyd

Sarah Floyd
A daughter of William Jeremiah Hill, she was born on 24 May 1829 in Newbury. In the 1851 census she is recorded in the employ of George Buckeridge, Grocer in Bridge Street, as a Servant. Later she married William Floyd in 1860 In Newington. Their son Arthur was born in London in 1861.
In 1861 she visited her sister Martha Hill in Winchester who was looking after the 3 children of the sister Mary Ann Lewendon who had died in 1858 and was the wife of Eliel Lewendon. The children were William born 1852, Mary Ann b.1854 and Martha b. 1855.
William and Sarah started a grocery business which became known as the Fountain Stores in the City, and also by 1891 together with their son Arthur had taken over the "Fountain" Coffee House, which was opened in June 1881 as an extension to the Guildhall Coffee House in Mansion House Street. After her husband William Floyd died in January 1900 she continued the grocery business at the Fountain Stores and Post Office with the help of 2 assistants. Her son Arthur and his family had moved to Ilford, Essex, where he ran a fruiterer's and greengrocer's. She died on 22 October 1907 aged 78 years, still living at St. John's Post Office, and she was buried on 25 October 1907 in the same private grave as her husband and two of their grandchildren Ernest Herbert Floyd and Mabel Susan Floyd.
