Transciption: | ALFRED BAILEY Death and Burial of a Veteran Oddfellow - On Thursday last, Mr. Alfred Bailey, who has filled the post of corresponding secretary of the Newbury and District of Oddfellows for nearly 40 years, passed quietly away after an illness of several months. The deceased, who had reached 81 years of age, was highly esteemed by the brethren of the Order, having always faithfully and zealously performed the duties of his important office, The funeral was on Tuesday, the first part of the service being at St. John’s Church, and was attended by members of his family and a representative number of his brother Oddfellows, including Prov. G.M. Bro. G. Ford, P.P.G.M’s H. Pratt, H. Wilder, W.Taylor, W. Ward, F. Staunton, E.W.M. Curwood, D Geater, E. Bance, G. Walters, G. Abraham, E. Bance, and P.G.’s D. New and J. Witts. The oldest Oddfellow in the District J.P.P.G.M. Henry White, who has been a member of the order 63 years was also present. Deceased was a member of an old Newbury family, and was widely known from having been in the employ of Mr. James H. Lucas and subsequently of Messrs. Lucas and Son. His later years had been spent in the comfort of the Church Almshouses |
