John Marshall
John Marshall
He was born in 1840 in Speen. His parents were Joseph and Maria (Odiham) Marshall. His father was an agricultural labourer. His parents married in 1824 in Thatcham and by the time John was born they had had 4 children: Thomas (age 15); Joseph (9); Mary (6) and Richard (3). By 1851 two further daughters were born: Maria (b. 1844) and Emma (b. 1847).
At the age of 22 in 1861 he is working as a gardener at Inglewood Farm, Kintbury, and some time later he moved to the parish of Speen. On 24 April 1869, at St. Mary Church, Speen, he married Ann Marshall, daughter of Thomas and Eliza Sawyer.
They make their home in Bagnor near the Blackbird beer house. Their daughter Catherine was born on 8 June 1877 at Winkfield. For further information, see record of his wife Ann Marshall (1839-1915).
He continued to work as a domestic gardener in a number of local parishes and by 1901 he finally settled with Ann at 6 Albert Terrace, Newbury.
John died at home in September 1907, aged 67 years, and he was buried in the Cemetery on 23 September.
Ann went to live with her daughter Catherine and son-in-law Lawrence Bernard Isles at Falkland Villa, Andover Road, where she died in February 1915, aged 75 years, and she was buried on 6 February.
