Rachel, her parents, siblings and early life:

Rachael Eagleton was baptised in 1829 in Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire, the daughter of Isaac and Anne Eagleton (nee Austin) who were married in Shaw cum Donnington in 1815. (The family surname has been recorded as both Eagleton and Eggleton)

 

Other children of Isaac and Anne baptised in Shaw cum Donnington were:

John Eagleton 1818

Amelia Eagleton 1821

Eliza Eagleton 1824 (died 1825, buried 14th June at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington)

William Eagleton 1826

Sarah Eggleton 1832 (died aged 2 months, buried 1st March at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington)

Matthew Eggleton 1833

Isaac Eggleton 1836

 

In 1841 Rachel Eagleton (11) was recorded living in Shaw cum Donnington with her father Isaac (45), an Agricultural Labourer, her mother Anne (48), her brothers John (20), William (15), Matthew (7) and Isaac (5).

 

Rachel in later life:

Rachel married (as Rachel Eggleton) John Bryant in 1848 (marriage registered in Newbury).

 

In 1851 Rachel (23) was recorded living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury with her husband John Briant (33), a Fishmonger.

 

Rachel and John had the following children:

Richard c1855 (died aged 6 weeks buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery (as Richard Bryant) on the 20th April)

Rachel c1856

 

John died aged 39 in 1856, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th July.

 

Rachel gave birth to a son George in the December quarter 1859.

 

The 1861 census records Rachel Briant (33) and her children John (10), Charles (8), Rachel (6) and George (1) living in Bradley’s Yard (off Cheap Street), Newbury, also recorded in the household was a lodger, Nathaniel Winter (51) a Bricklayer’s Labourer,

 

 Rachel married Nathaniel Winter later that year.

 

Marriage details:

Place: St Nicolas Church Newbury

Date: 26th May 1861

Groom: Nathaniel James Winter, aged 50, widower, occupation, Labourer

Bride: Rachel Bryant, aged 30, widow

Fathers: Nathaniel Winter, occupation, Barber and Isaac Eggleton, occupation, Gardener

Witnesses: James French and Ann French

Groom signed Bride made her mark.

 

Rachel and Nathaniel had the following children:

William born 1862

Amelia 1867

 

The 1871 census records the family living in Steamer’s Yard Newbury, Nathaniel was still working as a Bricklayer’s Labourer.

 

By 1881 Nathaniel was working as a Builder’s Timekeeper and the family were living in Ashdown Court, Newbury.

 

The 1891 census records Nathaniel (84), Rachel (58) and Amelia (22) living in St John’s Almshouses, Argyle Road, Newbury.

 

Nathaniel died aged 91 in 1898, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd November.

 

The 1901 census records Rachel (70) as a Pauper/Charwoman, in the Workhouse Newbury.  She died in the Workhouse in 1907 aged 72 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd May.
