Transciption: | THE LATE MR. T. M. NIAS
A memorial service was held on Sunday evening in the Baptist Chapel, the pulpit was draped in black in recognition of his services to the diaconate by the deceased.
The service opened with the anthem “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.” The other hymns were “How blest the righteous when he dies.” “Peace, perfect peace.” and “For ever with the Lord.”
The sermon was preached from the passage “We know that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” At the close, sympathetic reference was made to his sixty years membership and 32 years as a deacon.
Deceased was not the oldest member, this distinction being attached to Miss Eliza Freeman, who joined the church in 1844.
There is a tablet in the present chapel to Mrs. Ann Nias, who was born in 1683 (forty years after the formation of the church), and died in 1773. Another tablet refers to Mrs. Mary Adnam, born in 1758 and died in 1848. Mr. Nias was born in 1825, so that the memory of these three persons constitutes personal links reaching back almost to the formation of the Baptist Church in Newbury, as Mrs. Adnam would be known to Mrs. Ann Nias who was in existence in 1683, also to Mr. Nias, who was living up to 1907.
