SUDDEN DEATH AT NEWBURY

An inquest was held on Tuesday evening at the Police-court, by Dr. Henry Watson, J.P., Borough Coroner on the body of Florence Blake, of 1, Albert-terrace, Jubilee-road, whose death occurred suddenly on the previous morning.

The first witness was Mrs. Ellen Haines, mother of the deceased. The latter was only 19, but was married about nine months ago. Deceased had always suffered from her head. Five weeks ago since she was taken ill and was attended by Dr. Heywood. She never fully recovered and on Monday morning she died. Dr. Heywood stated he first saw deceased on the 22nd August, when she was suffering from an attack of jaundice, from which she recovered, but sickness continued until the 27th, when her mental condition became curious. On Monday morning she died suddenly.

On Tuesday, by order of the Coroner, he performed a post mortem, and found in the centre of the brain a clot of blood, which was no doubt the cause of death. The Coroner said Dr Heywood had properly refused to give a certificate. It was so unusual for a young woman of 19 to die suddenly, and without reason, that a post mortem was necessary to clear up what could not otherwise be explained.

The jury returned a verdict of “Death from natural causes”.
