THE LATE MRS. BRAIN
The deepest sympathy goes out to Mr. William Brain, “The Pebbles,” Highfield-avenue, in the sad death of his wife, Mrs. Kate Brain, which occurred on Friday in her 57th year. Born at Todmorton, Yorkshire, Mrs Brain was the daughter of Mr. Sam Lord, a director of Lord Brothers , engineers and weavers, of the town. During her residence in Newbury she made a host of friends, for hers was a happy and genial disposition, which made her popular with everyone. When Mr. Brain was short-handed during the busy days of the war, in addition to her household duties she assisted her husband in his coal business, and there made many firm friends with the customers. Since the war the firm has made a special point of employing wounded ex-service men, and in this direction Mrs. Brain showed a very sympathetic and practical interest. Her death followed a painful and protracted illness, but during the whole of the time she maintained her usual cheerfulness.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at the Newtown-road Cemetery, and the large number of beautiful wreaths testified to the esteem in which she was held by her many friends and also the firm's employees. The grave was lined with moss and flowers. The service was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. L.R. Majendie.
The mourners were: Mr. W. Brain (husband).Mrs Cheetham (sister), Mrs Dain (daughter), Mr. W.H. Brain (son), Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Brain (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. Dain (son-in-law), Mrs. Marrack; Mr. W. Lord (nephew), Mr. and Mrs. H. Wood (niece and nephew); Mr. and Mrs. Pollard (niece and nephew); Mr. Brazier, Nurse Mittell, Mr. Davis.
Noticed at the graveside were Mr. Beatty, Mr. Gurr, Mr. Aleyne, Miss Brown, the Rev. Father Green, Mrs. Pike, Mr. Lister, Mrs. Brazier, and many others.
There follows a long list of floral tributes.
