SAMUEL HASSELL

From a fuller account submitted by a great grand child (?)

Samuel John Hassell was probably born in Speen in 1839, as the 1841census records him as being 2 years of age. The 1851 census say he is 12, and his burial entry in 1906 records him as being 67 years old. His marriage certificate simply says “Full” under “age”. I have not been able to verify his birth details.

On his marriage certificate Samuel is recorded as being a “plumber”; on Clara Ann's birth certificate he is a Master Plumber, on Laura's he is listed as a Plumber and Glazier, and on the 1901 census he is a Plumber and Painter.

The 1861 census records him and his brother George living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with their mother Ann, a widow. Sometime between April 1861 and March 1864 both he and Emily Elborough were in Greenwich, because that is where they were married.

Between 1864 and 1866 Samuel moved back from Greenwich with his new wife Emily (daughter Clara Ann was born there in 1866 and son Samuel in 1869) in Bartholomew Street, Newbury as were all the children.

Alice Hassell was born on 17 April 1871. Her baptismal record in St Nicolas Church for June 1871 p.95 *758 reads

Alice daughter of Samuel and Alice Hassell. Abode: Newbury. Profession Plumber.

The 1901 census records Samuel John Hassell, aged 52 living at 40 Bartholomew Street, Newbury, a plumber and painter, born 183 9 in Speenhamland, and a widower.

Samuel died in Newbury on Wednesday 20 June 1906 at 40 Bartholomew Street aged 67 years. His occupation was listed as (Master) plumber on the death certificate. He was buried on 23 June 1906.

THE FUNERAL took place on Saturday of the late Mr. Samuel John Hassell, who for many years had carried on business as a plumber and decorator in Bartholomew-street. He was a member of an old Speenhamland family, and as a youth was apprenticed to his uncle, Mr. John Keys, who then carried on the business to which Mr. Hassell eventually succeeded.
