Transciption: | The Late Mr. William Ainslie.—The deceased gentleman, late a judge of the High Court, Calcutta, who has died at Newbury at the age of 80, was appointed to the Bengal Civil Service from Haileybury College in 1845. He was specially employed in 1850-1 and 1851-2 in the suppression of the Meriah sacrifices in the Khond districts. He was afterwards magistrate of Rungpore, railway commissioner for the East Indian Railway, magistrate and collector at Bhagulpore, and railway commissioner of the Eastern Bengal Railway, and subsequently of the South Eastern Railway also. After serving in the judicial department he was appointed Civil and Sessions Judge in Patna, and was in 1867-8 President of the Commission. He officiated as Judge of the High Court at Calcutta from November, 1870, till May 1873, when he was confirmed in the appointment, and was from then till April, 1880 when he retired a judge of the High Court. For many years after his retirement Mr. Ainslie lived at Torquay, where his name will always be remembered in connection with the management and restoration of the Torbay Hospital. In 1901 he removed to Newbury, where he died on Tuesday, Feb. 13th. The funeral took place last Friday, and was conducted by the Rev. R. Wickham Legg, Vicar of St. John's Church, where the first part of the service was held. |

William was born in 1826 and died in February 1906 aged 80 years. He lived in Newtown Road, Newbury. He was a judge of the High Court at Calcutta from 1873 until 1880. Previously he had worked in the Bengal Civil Service. He retired to Torquay in 1880 and then moved to Newbury in 1901.

Born Bengal, India in 1826. Employed as civil servant. marriage to Amelia Caroline Gouldesbury in 1852
Back in UK in 1861 living at Lentwardine, Herefordshire. Wife living at Wilton, near Salisbury.
From 1881 he lived for 30 years in Torquay, with two daughters and several servants. Described as retired Indian Civil Servant.
Shortly after 1901 census he arrived in Newbury, where he died in 1906 at South End Lodge, Newtown Road aged 80.
