The sudden death occurred on Thursday last of Mr. Stephen Brind, of Shaw. The deceased lived with his son at the branch shop of Messrs. Webb and Son, and had been ailing for some time, suffering more especially from a cough.
He was about the previous day in business, and retired to bed as usual, but in the morning his son, not hearing his father about, went into his bedroom and found he was dead in bed, having evidently passed away in his sleep. Though he had not seen a doctor since last October, the doctor had no difficulty in certifying that death arose from natural causes, and thus an inquest was avoided.
Deceased had been in the employ of Messrs. Webb and Son for a period of half-a-century, and was deservedly esteemed for his upright character and strick [sic] integrity.
The funeral took place on Monday at the Cemetery, and in addition to the mourners, a number of friends assembled at the open grave. The Rev. F. Hallliday officiated.
The deceased had been a local preacher for the long period of fifty years, and his name stood among the foremost on the Wesleyan circuit plan. A number of his colleagues were present, including Messrs. Woodger, North, Sainsbury, Garlick, Oliver, and several others. The Rev. D.M. Kerr made reference in his sermon at Northbrook-street on Sunday to the usefulness of the deceased and his attachment to the cause with which he had stood so long identified. At Stockcross, where Mr. Woodger was preaching, and at other places in the circuit, mention was made of the departure of their late friend and brother.
