1848-1905

 

Caroline Adams was born in Newbury, she was baptised on the 30th April 1848 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughter of Sarah Adams, a spinster.

 

Her mother Sarah was born c1821 the daughter of John (a Carpenter) and Sarah Adams.

 

In 1851 Caroline (3) was living in Newbury Wharf with her grandparents John and Sarah Adams and her mother Sarah (30), a Laundress.

 

Her mother married James Bradfield in 1853 (marriage registered in Newbury).

 

After James and Sarah married Caroline was known as Caroline Bradfield.

 

James and Sarah had the following two children:

Sarah born 1856 (died aged 2 in 1858, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th November)

 

In 1861 James (38), Sarah (40) Caroline (13) and James (7) were living in the City, Newbury.

 

James Bradfield died aged 38 in 1861, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd August

 

Caroline gave birth to a daughter Sarah c1869 (birth registered as Sarah Bradfield)

 

She married (as Caroline Adams) in 1870.

Groom: James Young, full age, bachelor, occupation: Labourer, abode: Newbury

Bride: Caroline Adams, full age, spinster, abode: Newbury

Fathers: James Young, occupation: Shoemaker (no father recorded for Caroline)

Witnesses: John Stillman and Sarah Stillman

Groom made his mark, Bride signed.

 

James and Caroline had the following children:

Percy Albert 1890 (died aged 6 hours in 1890, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd October)

 

The 1871 census records Caroline (23), James (26) and Caroline’s daughter Sarah (2) (now known as Sarah Young) living at 2 Lewis’s Buildings, Bartholomew Street, Newbury, James was recorded as a Bricklayer’s Labourer.

(Caroline’s mother Sarah (50) was recorded living at 11 Lewis’s Buildings, Bartholomew Street, working as a Laundress, her son James (17) was living with her and was working as a Bricklayer.)

 

The 1881 census records the Young family living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, James was recorded as a Bricklayer. Caroline’s mother Sarah was also recorded living with the family and was recorded as a Charwoman.

 

By 1891 the family had moved to 9 New Square, Newbury, James was still working as a Bricklayer. Caroline’s mother was still living with them.

 

In 1901 the family were recorded living in Clare Place, Newbury, James was recorded in the census for this year as a General Labourer. Caroline’s mother was again recorded living with them.

 

Caroline’s mother died aged 80 in 1901, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th April.

 

Caroline died aged 57 in 1905, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th April.

 

James remarried in 1907, his 2nd wife was a widow, Harriet Matilda Bellinger (nee Alway, widow of Henry Bellinger).

 

In 1911 James and Harriet were recorded living separately. James (64) was recorded as a Bricklayer, living with his married daughter Sarah Hosier and her family in Derby Road, Newbury. Harriet was recorded aged 59, living at 8 Trafalgar Place, Newbury.

 

James died aged 68 on the 8th February 1916, his obituary records that he had been living with his daughter Mrs A Hosier (this was Sarah Bradfield (later known as Sarah Young) his step-daughter who married Alfred Thomas Hosier in 1894) for about 8 years. There was no mention of his wife Harriet attending the funeral.

 

Harriet Matilda Young died aged 79 in 1931 (death registered in Newbury)
