| Transciption: | GRAVE OF THE MONTH/APRIL 2026 Alexander James Felton 1871-1905
Alexander was born on 11th January 1871 in Brighton to James Felton Jnr. (Leather Merchant) and Florence Foot. Alexander had 9 half siblings. By the time of the 1891 census Alexander was listed as head of the household and his occupation was Dairyman living in Streatham. Also listed in the accommodation was Selina Wellar, a boarder, and his nephew. On the 13th June 1891 both Alexander and Selina were listed as passengers on the Alaska bound for New York which arrived on 22nd June 1891. On the 30th August 1891 they were married in Manhattan, New York. They returned to the UK and were listed in the 1901 census as living in East Ham, Essex; Alexander listed as a Tailor’s Cutter.
By 1903 Kellys Directory entry Alexander had his own shop premises at 102 Northbrook Street, alongside Northcroft Lane (now Côte Brasserie). In November 1902 The Reading Mercury made the following report. William Quinton was employed for only 1 week as an errand boy working at Alexander’s shop. Along with his brother Frederick they stole a cash box on the night of the 14th November. The box contained important papers and money totalling £2 2s. Both boys were sent to reformatory. Alexander passed away at the age of 35, recorded on his death certificate is Cardiac Syncope, Tabes Dorsalis and Pulmonary Tuberculosis. He was buried on the 12th April at Newtown Road Cemetery, Newbury. |
