Charles Allum

1843-1904

Charles, his parents, siblings and early life:

Charles was born in Reading Berkshire, he was baptised on the 8th October 1843, at St Giles, Reading, the son of Richard and Jo(h)anna Allum (nee Bernard) who were married on the 29th December 1833, at St Giles, Reading.

Richard and Jo(h)anna also had the following children:

Richard, baptised on the 21st December 1834

William Jacob, baptised on the 2nd October 1836

Harry, born c1839 (baptised on the 9th June 1839 as John, aka John)

In 1841 Richard (30), an Agricultural Labourer, Joanna (25), Richard (7), William (5) and John (2) were living in Silver Street, Reading.

Richard died aged 37 in 1844, he was buried on the 1st January 1845, at St Giles, Reading.

The 1851 census records Joanna (33) as a Charwoman, living at 19 Silver Street, Reading with her children, Richard (16), Willian (14), Harry (11) and Charles (7).

Joanna remarried in 1854. Her 2nd husband was Charles Waller.

Charles in later life:

Charles married in 1863.

Place: St Giles, Reading

Date: 16th May 1863

Groom: Charles Allum, aged 19, bachelor, occupation, Labourer, abode, Silver Street

Bride: Louisa Sturges, aged 20, spinster, abode, Chesterman’s Buildings

Charles and Louisa had the following children:

James Henry, born 1867

Joanna, born 1869

William, born 1871 (died aged 11 days, buried 17th May 1871, in the London Road Cemetery, Reading)

William, born 1872 (died aged 1 month, buried 27th April in the London Road Cemetery, Reading)

 

Charles was widowed in 1879. Louisa died aged 35, she was buried on the 6th January, in the London Road Cemetery, Reading.

Marriage details:
Place: St Giles, Reading

Date: 21st October 1888

Groom: Charles Allum, aged 40, widower, occupation, Plasterer, abode, 8 Crown Place

Bride: Alice Saunders, aged 29, spinster, abode, 12 Church Street

Fathers: Richard Allum, a Bricklayer and Thomas Saunders, a Coach Builder

Witnesses: James Allum and Ellen Allum

The 1891 census records Charles (45) as Charles Wallers or Allum, a Plasterer, (ancestry records this as Charles Walters A Allum), living at 5 Pembroke Road, Newbury, Berkshire, with Alice (28) (ancestry records Alice aged 48).

Charles and Alice had a daughter, Elsie, born in 1892 in Newbury, Berkshire

The 1901 census records Charles Wallers (52) as a Plasterer, living at 1 Diamond Cottages, Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with Alice (37) and Elsie (8) (surname recorded as Walters on ancestry)

Charles died aged 56 in 1904. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th April.

Alice remarried soon after she was widowed in 1904. Her 2nd husband was Henry Tatum.

The 1911 census records Henry Tatum (40) Alice Tatum (45), and Elsie Allum (19) living at 11 King Street, Jericho, Oxfordshire.
