Recorder's Notes | It would appear that Mary Ann was buried a year after her death. This is unlikely and the the worn inscription should be 1911. Evidence is that the abode on the burial register is that of her daughter. |

Transciption: | GEORGE SMITH DEATH OF A CRIMEAN VETERAN – There died on Tuesday, in the Church Almshouses, George Smith, aged 68, who was a Crimean Veteran. Born at Ecchinswell, he joined the 7th Royal Fusiliers in 1854, at the age of 17, and immediately went out to his regiment to the Crimea, where he was wounded by the bursting of a shell, and lost his right leg. He was subsequently discharged as unfit for further service in consequence of the injuries then inflicted. He received the Turkish Medal, and also the Crimean with the Sebastopol bar. He had been an out-pensioner of Chelsea Hospital since 1855, receiving 10d a day. Newbury Weekly News 28 January 1904 Buried 28 January 1904 age 68 Book 1899, page 079, No. 7826 |
