Death of Mr. Bruce Gould. – Very general regret has been felt at the almost sudden death of Mr. Brice Gould, of Bartholomew Street, which took place early on Saturday morning. Mr. Gould had been suffering from ulceration of the stomach, and had two or three attacks lately. There was recurrence of the disease last week, but not serious enough to suggest alarming apprehensions, and indeed, he was engaged in business on Thursday. He was not so well on Friday, and died early new morning from syncope while the doctor was in attendance. The death of Mr. Gould in the prime of life, his age being44, has awakened a feeling of sincere sorrow, particularly as he has ever shown himself to be helpful to all with whom he was brought into contact. Though reserved in disposition, he had the kindest of hearts and was never happier than when endeavour to relieve distress. He was one of the founders of the Robin Dinner Fund, whereby so many children used to be regaled at Christmas-time with a good dinner. Then he was an active worker in the cause of the Fresh Air Mission, which brought down hundreds of London children to revel on the beautiful commons in the district. He would meet them on arrival, when they were pallid and lifeless, and saw them return bronzer and full of vigour. Mr Gould was one of the original members of the Mission Band holding serves at the Temperance Hall, in connection with which he was a devoted worker. He was the only son of Mr. John Gould, whom he succeeded in the grocery business a few years ago on the former retiring from active management. Great sympathy is felt for the widow and two children in their bereavement. The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, the first part of the service being conducted in the Wesleyan Chapel by the Revs. F. Halliday and H.E. Dean. There was a large congregation, including Alderman Fidler, Messrs. J.B. and S. Webb, Mr. and Mrs. S. Walter, Messrs, W. Penford, Hannibal Hill, T. Pratt, J.C. Slight, J.W. Righton, W.R. Pettifer, H.T. Bendy, T. Garlick, G. Bowden, B.F. Freeman, Cope, Mr. and Mrs. Woodger, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Allen, and many other townspeople. The mourners were Mrs. Gould (widow), Misses Phoebe and Kate Gould (sisters), Miss Tuckey and Miss E. Tuckey (sisters-in-law), Mr. and Miss Arney, Mr. Thicks, Mr. Daniells, Mr. Benn, and the employees. The Coffin of polished oak, with brass fittings was inscribed:- “Brice Gould Died Jan. 9, 1904 Aged 44 Among the floral tokens of affection and sympathy were the following:- “From your ever loving wife and children,” “With much love from Father, Millie, Phoebe and Kate,” “In loving memory of Uncle Brice from Winnie and Jack,” Mr. and Mrs. Brittain, Mr. and Mrs. Strange and family, Mr. and Mrs. D. Skinner, Mr. and Mrs. Bond, Mr. and Mrs. F. Pullen, Kops Brewery, London; J. and A. Deacon, Isabel and Sister, the Employees. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Penford and Son. Northbrook Street. Also: Priscilla 27.03.1942 |
