ROBERT EATWELL

THE LATE MR. ROBERT EATWELL.

On Saturday evening last Mr. Robert Eatwell passed away at his residence Victoria House, Market-street, at the age of 65. Deceased was a well-known tradesman, having carried the business of appraiser, furniture dealer, and upholsterer for nearly forty years.

He was born at Aldbourne, Wilts; served his apprenticeship at Hungerford, coming to Newbury at the age of 20 years, and working at his trade, subsequently he took the premises and commenced as a broker with a few articles of furniture. Business gradually increased, until he became known as a dealer in antique furniture, china and curios, having customers in all parts of the country. He was also accustomed to attend the auction sales in the district, his imperturbable good humour and native wit often times proved of advantage to the auctioneers in imparting pleasantry to business.

He took little part in public affairs, but throughout maintained his connection with Wesleyan Methodism, of which he was an attached member, and occasionally was wont to conduct village services.

A sudden chill about six weeks ago brought on its serious complications, death ensuing at 10.15 p.m. on Saturday.

He leaves a family of grown up sons and daughters, and he survived his wife about three and a half years.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) at the Cemetery, the Rev. F. Halliday officiating. The mourners were Messrs. John, William, Charles, and Harry Eatwell (sons), Misses Marian and Edith Eatwell, Mrs. Freeguard, Mrs. J. Tucker (daughters.), Mr. Freeguard, Mr. .J. Tucker (sons-ln-law), Miss Fry, Messrs. E. Buckland, G. Farmer, A. Collins (nephews), Mr. Parr (representing Messrs. Hopson), Mr. Cope (Messrs. Bazett and Pitman), Mr. C . Orchard (Albourne), Mr. J. Dew, and others. The coffin was lowered in the grave by the four sons. It was of polished elm with brass fittings. and bore the inscription:

ROBERT EATWELL

Died December 19th, 1903,

Aged 65 years.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. T. Eatwell, of Ramsbury.
