Emily Payne (1829 – 1921)
Emily Powe was born on 28 November 1829 at Atherstone in Warwickshire, the daughter of Edward and Mary Power. She was baptized on 30 January 1830 at St Mary in Atherstone, her father Edward was recorded as a clerk.
In the 1841 census Emily was living with her parents Edward and Mary and six siblings in Market Place in Atherstone, Edward was clerk MA. Ten years later in the 1851 census Emily was living in the grammar school in Market Place in Atherstone with her parents, sister Mary Jane and aunt Caroline Lucy, Edward was recorded as the master of the grammar school.
Emily married a solicitor Edward Payne on 2 February 1861 at St Mary in Merton. Both Emily and Edward were recorded as living in Merton at the time of the marriage. A son Frank was born in 1863 in Wandsworth.
Edward died on 19 January 1865 at Belgrano near Buenos Aires in Argentina. He left a will and probate was granted to Emily on 11 May 1865. She was recorded as residing in Wandsworth. The value of the estate was under £4,000,
In the 1871 census Emily along with her son Frank and aunt Caroline Lucy were living at 15 Lansdown Circus in Leamington. Both Emily and Caroline were recorded as annuitants. No trace of Emily or Frank in the 1881 census.
Emily was recorded in the 1891 census with her son Frank along with a visitor and a servant at Board House, Woodcote Green near Epsom. Frank was a commission merchant.
Ten years later in the 1901 census Emily was living in Banstead with her daughter in law Lilian Mary Payne and grand-daughter Dorothy Payne aged 9. Emily was recorded as blind.
By the time of the 1911 census Emily was recorded with her son Frank and his wife Lilian Mary living in Ashgate near Chesterfield. Frank was an engineer’s inspector to a millwright and iron founders.
In the 1921 census Emily was recorded with her niece Leila Power living in Park House in Wash Common along with 3 visitors and 4 servants.
Emily died a few months later on 11 September 1921 aged 91 while still living at Park House and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 14 September. She left a will and probate was granted on 9 November 1921 at London to her niece Leila Power. The value of the estate was £785 4s 6d.
