Jane Veale
1873-1903
Jane was born in 1873 (birth registered in Holborn). She was baptised on the 11th May 1873 at St Silas, Pentonville, Islington, Middlesex, the daughter of William (a Postman) and Sarah Ann Ryner Graham (nee Ferrell), of 48 Henry Place.
Her father William was born on the 24th July 1839 in Crewkerne, Somerset, he was baptised on the 1st September 1839 at St Bartholomew, Crewkerne, the son of Henry (a Mason) and Mary Graham
Her mother Sarah was born c1840 in Teynham, Kent, the daughter of George and Eleanor Ferrell (nee Dives) who were married on the 26th September 1838 in Teynham.
Jane’s parents were married on the 9th September 1861 at St Mark, Kensington Park Road, Lambeth.
They also had the following children:
Henry born 1862 in Camberwell
William born c1864 in Clerkenwell (baptised with Jane)
Mary Ann baptised 24th December 1865 in Pentonville
Margaret born c1866 in Clerkenwell
George baptised 23rd May 1869 at St Silas
Frank born 5th April, baptised 23rd April 1871 at St Silas
The 1871 census records her father William (31) as a Letter Carrier living at 40 Henry Street, Pentonville, London, with his wife Sarah (31) and their children Henry (8), William (7), Margaret (5) and George (2).
Jane’s father William died aged 36 on the 29th March 1876 at home (40 Henry Street.) He was buried on the 2nd April in Islington
In 1881 Jane (7) was still living at 40 Henry Steet, Pentonville, with her widowed mother Sarah (41), a Laundress and her brothers Henry (18), a Pupil Teacher and Frank (10) (surname recorded as Gratham on ancestry)
Her mother Sarah Ann R Graham died aged 47, in 1886 in Islington. She was buried on the 28th August in Islington
The 1891 census records Jane (17) living at 10 Colebrooke Row, Islington with her brother Henry (27), a Teacher
Jane married in 1893

Groom: William Veale, aged 23, bachelor, occupation, Policeman, abode, 38 Renfrew Road, Lambeth
Bride: Jane Graham, aged 20, spinster, abode, 59 Rushton Street
Fathers: Henry Veale, a Painter and William Graham, a Postman
Witnesses: Henry Graham and William Graham
(William Veale was born in 1869 in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Henry and Jeanette Veale (nee Norton, no marriage found for this couple yet))
William and Jane had the following children:
Florence May, born 1894 in Lambeth (died aged 1 in 1896 buried 16th February in Southwark)
Eva Alice Annie, born 4th March 1896, baptised 22nd March 1896 at St Mary, Newington, Southwalk
Winifred Elsie, born 16th September 1897, baptised 3rd October 1897 at St Mary Newington, Southwalk
William, born c1900 in Southwark (died soon after birth in 1900 in Southwark)
Both Eva and Winifred’s baptism records record the family living at 7 Holyoake Road.
The 1901 census records Jane (27) living a 7 Holyoake Road, Lambeth, with William (27), a Policeman, their daughters Eva (5), Winifred (3) and her brother Frank Graham (29), a Time Keeper at a Soap Factory.
Jane died aged 30 in 1903 in Newbury, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery of the 2nd November.
The 1911 census records William (41) as a Metropolitan Police Officer, living at Vermont, Westmead Road, Sutton, Carshalton, Surrey with his daughter Winifred (13). His daughter Eva (15) was working as a Housemaid for a Solicitor, Charles Edward Pothecary (56) and his family, at Ettrick Lodge, Albion Road Sutton, Carshalton, Surrey.
William died aged 46 in 1916, in Newbury.
