The Newbury Weekly News dated 20th May 1886 reported the following:

 

BOROUGH POLICE COURT

FRIDAY

Before the Mayor (R. Ravenor Esq), J. H. Mason, and J. Absolom Esqrs.

 

CHARGE OF ASSAULTING WIFE.

James Quinton was charged with assaulting his wife, Sarah Ann Quinton, on the 8th May.

Complainant said she went to the “Robin Hood” to speak to her husband, when he abused her and struck her.

They had been married five-and-twenty years.

The Bench fined defendant £1 and 9s costs or 14 days hard labour. Defendant expressed himself unable to pay, but his son offered to find the money.

Newbury Weekly News dated the 19th August 1886 reported the following:

 

BOROUGH POLICE COURT

FRIDAY

Before the Mayor (R. Ravenor Esq), J. P. Jackson, and S. Hemsted Esqrs.

 

THE CASE OF DESERTION

Mr. Scard, solicitor, of Greenwich, made an application to the Bench in the matter of James Quinton, who was recently summoned for deserting his wife, and ordered to pay 6s a week towards her maintenance. Mr. Scard applied that the case should be re-heard, urging that the conduct of the wife had driven Quinton from home. The Bench declined to grant the application.

James was born on the 20th August 1833 in Hawkchurch Dorset, he was baptised on the 2nd March 1834 at Morcombe Lake Independent, Dorset, the son of Samuel (a Labourer) and Mary Quintin (nee Gayer/Gaylor) who were married in 1808 in Allington, Dorset.

Samuel and Mary also had the following children (baptised in Hawkchurch):

Samuel 25th February 1816

Elizabeth 21st May 1820

Eliza 8th May 1824

Eliza 26th December 1824

Sarah 11th February 1827

Jane 7th January 1832

In 1841 James (7) was living in Hawkchurch, Dorset with his father Samuel (57), his mother Mary (52), his brothers Peter (30) and Henry (18) and his sister Ann (11).

The 1861 census records James (27) (surname recorded as Quniting on ancestry) as a Carter, living in Watton, Symondsbury, Dorset.

He married in 1861

James and Sarah had the following children:

Alice Mary Quinton 1864, baptised 30th July 1865 in Dorchester

James John Quinton 1866, baptised 31st July 1866 in Fordington (died 1867)

Sarah Ann Quinton 1867, baptised 8th December 1867 in Marshwood

Bessie Quinton 1868, baptised 19th May 1869 in Fordington (died 1869)

 

In 1871 James (38) an Agricultural Labourer, Sarah (33), Eliza Jane (9), Samuel (8), Alice (7) and Sarah Ann (3) were living in Wraxwall, Dorset (surname recorded as Quinton on ancestry)

The 1881 census records James (49) a Labourer, Sarah (44) and their children Samuel (19) a Labourer and Sarah Ann (13), living in Quarkers Burial Ground, Newbury (surname recorded as Quinton on ancestry).

In 1886 James found himself in trouble with the law. The Newbury Weekly News dated 20th May 1886 reported the following:

The 1886 and 1887 Electoral Register for Newbury records James living in Bolton Place, Newbury.

 

By 1891 James (58) and Sarah (58) were living at 2 Crown Place, Newbury, Berkshire, James was working as a Drayman. (Surname recorded as Quinton on ancestry)

Sarah Ann Quintin died 59 on the 26th November 1898, she was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th November.

The 1897 Electoral Register for Newbury records James living in Golding’s Yard, Newbury

The 1901 census records James Quinton (70) in the Southampton Workhouse he was suffering from Stricture, and was recorded as a Pauper/General Labourer.

He died aged 71 in 1903 in the Newbury Workhouse and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th September. (Surname registered as Quinton at time of death)
