Transciption: | THE LATE MISS STAPLES The death occurred on Friday at her residence in Andover-road of Miss Anne Maria, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Staples, of Northbrook-street. She had lived in Newbury all her life. While her health lasted she was a devoted Church worker in connection with the Parish Church. She took great interest in her work as teacher of music, and was for many years local secretary for Trinity College of Music. Of late years failing health compelled her to give up most of her activities. She was laid to rest in the Newtown-road Cemetery yesterday (Wednesday), following a service in the Parish Church. Many beautiful flowers were sent from the following relatives and friends: Anna and Ria; Emmie and Gladys; Henry, Nellie and Andrew; Janie and Pam, Tom and Winnie; Miss Count; Miss Wilson; Jim and Lily Thorn; Mary Holloway; Mrs. Ramsey; Miss Dunster; Mrs. Frost; Mrs. Osborne; Alla and Madge; Mrs. Elliot and Mrs. Newton; Mr. Kimber, Cis and Lil; Eva Davis; Misses and Mr. Garland; Emily Pratt; Belle and Rilla; Mrs. Keep and Beryl; Mr. and Mrs. A. Rogers. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. A. J. Chivers. Newbury Weekly News dated 9 February 1928.

Staples Family – Annie Maria Staples
Annie Maria (or Anne Marie) was born in 1855, and lived with her parents at 32 Northbrook Street, Newbury until between 1881 and 1891 when she moved out possibly because her mother died and father remarried? She doesn’t appear to have been involved in the confectioners shop, and didn’t take it on after her father’s death or the death of her stepmother. She worked as a teacher of music and died in 1928, she is buried in Newtown Road cemetery (grave WA 19). The cemetery record says her uncle had apples named after him – Millers Seedlings. There is a link to my family here – Anne Miller was my great grandfather’s first wife. Her cousin, Anna Maria Paine, who was living with her in 1911 and 1921, died in 1935, and is also buried at the Newtown Road cemetery (WA 19).
