JOSEPH WOOF

WOOLF  (sic) – July 18, at the Workhouse, Newbury, Joseph Woolf, of Greenham, aged 76 years.


The death of Joseph Wooff, age 76, 18 July 1902, is recorded in the Newbury Union workhouse death records, from Greenham, Buried Newbury Cemetery

Joseph Woof

He was born into a family of agricultural labourers who lived on Greenham Common. He was baptised at Thatcham on 26 March 1828: his parents were John Woof and his wife Lydia, née Bellinger.  His siblings were Henry (b. 1831), George (b. 1835), Ellen (b. 1838), Harriet (b. 1842); Eliza (b. 1844) and Charles (b. 1846).

He lived with his parents working as a farmer’s labourer, and he was unmarried.  His mother Lydia died in 1873, aged 72 years, and his father in 1879, aged 77 years. By the 1881 census he was an inmate of the Newbury Union Workhouse where he remained until his death on 18 July 1902, aged 76 years.
