Eliza Griffiths
c1821-1901
Eliza was baptised on the 11th November 1821, in Brighton, Sussex, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Sawyer.
Eliza married in 1850
Marriage details:
Place: St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire
Date: 17th April 1850
Groom: Henry Griffiths, full age, bachelor, occupation, Whitesmith, abode, Newbury
Bride: Eliza Sawyer, full age, spinster, abode, Newbury
Fathers: William Griffiths, a Whitesmith and Charles Sawyer, a Pensioner
Witnesses: Henry Albert Hicks and Charlotte Slater
(Henry was baptised on the 8th July 1827 as William Henry Griffiths, the son of William and Mary Griffiths (nee Powers) who were married on the 17th October 1824 at St Mary’s Church Thatcham, both were single. Mary was from Greenham.)
The 1851 census records Henry as William H. Griffiths (23), a Gas Fitter, living in Back Lane, Newbury, with Eliza (28)
Eliza gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth in 1851 in Newbury.
Henry (33) was recorded as a Dealer, living with Eliza (38) and their daughter Elizabeth (9), in Back Lane Newbury in 1861.
Eliza was widowed by 1871, the census for this year records her as a Shopkeeper, aged 45, living at Lamburn’s Yard, off Back Lane, Newbury.
The 1881 and 1891 census records record her as a Shopkeeper, the 1901 census records her as a Sweet Shopkeeper. On all three census records she was recorded living at 1, Lisle Court, Newbury.
Eliza died aged 79 on the 1st September 1901, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th September.
