Ellen Merritt
c1826-1901
Ellen Harrison was born in Newbury she was the daughter of William & Martha Harrison (nee Freeman) who were married on the 1st February 1807 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
William and Martha also had the following children (and possibly more):

Jane c1810
Francis c1812
Elizabeth c1813
William c1828
The 1815 census of Newbury records William (37) as a Labourer, living on the east side of Bartholomew Street Newbury with Martha (31) and their children, Mary (7), Jane (5), Francis (3) and Elizabeth (1)
Ellen’s mother died aged 43 in 1826 she was buried on the 18th August at St Nicolas Newbury
In 1841 Ellen (15) was living in Bartholomew Street with her father William (60), a Gardener, her sister Mary (30) and her brother William (18), a Smith’s Apprentice (surname recorded as Hamson on Ancestry)
Ellen’s father died aged 67 in 1845 he was buried on the 1st November at St Nicolas Newbury
Ellen married John Merritt (born c1824 Bishops Cannings Devizes Wiltshire) in Newbury in 1850 and they had the following children:

Edward John c1857
Francis Harrison c1859
James Henry 1862 (died aged 0 in 1862 buried in the NRC on the 29th August)
Martha Ann 1863
In 1851 the family were living in Stillman’s Yard Newbury, John was working as an Ostler.
The 1861 census records the family living in Balding’s Yard, John was recorded as a Drayman.
John died aged 44 in 1867 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th October.
After her husband’s death Ellen was recorded as a Tailoress (1871), Sempstress (1881), Tailor (1891) and Upholsterer (1901. She was recorded living in Jack Street in 1871 and 1881 and Shaw Crescent in 1891 and 1901.
Ellen died aged 75 in 1901 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st July
