Ellen Hazell
1847-1901
Eleanor (aka Ellen) was born in 1847 in Woodspeen, Berkshire. She was baptised (as Ellen) on the 2nd may 1847 at St Mary, Speenhamland, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Stratton (nee Allen) who were married on the 16th May 1831 at St Mary, Speen.
Her father Thomas was a Labourer. He was born c1793 in Chaddleworth, Berkshire. He died aged 63 in 1856 and was buried on the 18th June at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.
Her mother Elizabeth was born c1804 in Speen, she died aged 74 in 1878 and was buried on the 19th May at St Mary the Virgin Speen.
Thomas and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised in Speenhamland:

Henry born c1839 (no baptism found)
Sarah 1st January 1843
William 2nd March 1845
Clara born 1849 (no baptism found)
In 1841 Thomas (47), Elizabeth (36), Elizabeth (7), John (4), Henry (2) and a John Allen (65), a Labourer (possibly Elizabeth’s father) were living in Kent Place, Speen, Berkshire.
In 1851 Ellen (4) was living in Kennet Place, Speen, with her parents Thomas (58) and Elizabeth (45) and her siblings Elizabeth (17), Sarah (8), William (6) and Clara (2).
The 1861 census records Ellen (12) living in Kennett Place, Speen with her widowed mother Elizabeth (60), a Laundress and her brothers John (20) a Grocer’s Porter and William (15) a Tailor’s Apprentice.
Ellen married Thomas Randall in 1868.
(Thomas was a Market Gardener. He was born on the 7th March 1836 in Harefield Middlesex the son of George and Martha Randall (nee Baldwin) who were married on the 27th November 1820 in Rickmansworth Hertford)
They had the following children:

The 1871 census records Ellen (24), her husband Thomas (28), a Market Gardener and their daughter Ellen (2) living with Ellen’s mother Elizabeth Stratton (68) at 6 Kennet Place, London Road, Speen.
Thomas died aged 41 in 1878
The 1881 census records Ellen (34) as a Laundress, she was living at Furze Hill, Speen with her children Ellen (12), Emily (10), Clara (9), Thomas (7) and Mary (3)
Ellen remarried in 1882 (marriage registered in Newbury) Her 2nd husband was John Malachi Hazell.
(John’s birth was registered as Malachi Hazell in the December quarter 1855 in Newbury. He was baptised as Malachi on the 28th June 1857 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of John and Ellen (Eleanor) Hazell (nee Curtis) who were married in 1846 (marriage registered in Newbury). In his early life John was known as Malachi, in later life he was known as both John and John Malachi Hazell.)
John and Ellen had the following children:
John Henry 1883
Twins: Daniel and John 1885 (John died aged 15 days, he was laid to rest in the NRC on the 21st December)
Elizabeth Annie 1888
Caroline Sarah 1891
In 1891 the family were living in St Mary’s Hill, Newbury, John was working as a General Labourer.
Ellen died aged 54 in 1901, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th February.
John Malachi died aged 62 on the 10th October 1919, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th October.
