Transciption: | JOHN ROSE A celebrity died in the Workhouse on Thursday, in the person of John Rose, He was better known as "Johnto" but why and wherefore is not clear. "Johnto" carried a precarious living in former years by carrying a baked potato-can or hawking fish and fruit. "Johnto" sought refuge in the Workhouse when he grew too old to work hard, and found delight in a little mild speculation at dominoes for imaginary sums.
Occasionally he would come down town, not always to his own benefit or the pleasure of well-meaning friends. The well-ordered diet and discipline of the Workhouse enabled him to live to the age of 72. Newbury Weekly News 5 April 1900 Not in Mrs P Buried 2 April 1900 aged 72 Bk 1899 p.012 no. 7296 |
