Recorder's Notes | James was born in Haxon Villlage, Fittleton near Netheravon, Wilts. to William & Alice, poor farm labourers who both became Paupers with Parish Relief. He became a Groom and married Mary Scott, daughter of a Bailiff from Netheravon. They married in 1846 and moved to Beechingstock near Pewsey as a groom. by 1861 he was in Woodspeen, Newbury working as a Coachman and Gardener. They had 6 children. On retirement as a Groom, James and Mary worked as General Servants for Charles L Chapman, Wine Merchant, Market Place, Newbury after which they retired to Wells Cottage, Market Place next to the Corn Exchange. Rachel worked as a General Servant to William Hall, Draper of the Broadway, Newbury. She then moved to Work as a Nurse & Servant to Wine Merchant, Edward Wells, first at Westmead House off Newtown Rd, then at Castle Houses, Speen, Newbury, where she died.
