Arthur Higgs (1863 – 1924)

Mary Elizabeth Higgs (1865 – 1900)

Arthur Higgs was born in Newbury on 6 May 1863 the son of Thomas and Mary, nee Garlick, Higgs. In the 1871 census Arthur was living with his parents and seven siblings at 3 Cheap Street in Newbury. Thomas was a stationer. Subsequently in the 1881 census Arthur was still living with his parents and now three siblings at 33/4 Cheap Street. Arthur was a draper’s assistant and his father Thomas still a stationer.

Ten years later in the 1891 census Arthur was recorded with his brother Walter and his wife and daughter as well as his brother John at 151 Bartholomew Street in Newbury. Walter was a grocer, John a hardware dealer and Arthur a grocer’s assistant.

Arthur married Mary Elizabeth Pascoe in 1893 in Hackney. Mary was born on 3 March 1865 in Midgham, the daughter of Samuel Augustus and Matilda, nee Willoughby, Pascoe.

Mary was recorded living with her uncle and aunt Charles and Elizabeth Willoughby in the 1871 census at Home Farm, Sparsholt in Berkshire. Charles was a farmer of 370 acres. Ten years later in the 1881 census Mary was still living with her aunt and uncle but now in Charles Street in Kingston, Surrey. Charles was a draper while Mary was an apprentice. Mary was still living with her aunt and uncle in the 1891 census now at 166 Glenarm Road in Hackney. Charles was a draper’s assistant and Mary a milliner.

Mary died on 26 January 1900 at High Street in Hungerford and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 February. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News of 1 February 1900 and Berkshire Chronicle of 3 February as below. In addition, there was a short report of the funeral in the Newbury Weekly News dated 8 February.

HIGGS – Jan. 26, at High St., Hungerford, Mary Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Arthur Higgs and second daughter of the late Samuel A Pascoe of Midgham, aged 35 years.   

In the 1901 and 1911 censuses Arthur was recorded in High Street in Hungerford with his sister Elizabeth Ann and brother-in-law Sidney Thomas Pascoe. In 1901 Arthur was a grocer, Elizabeth Ann a house keeper and Sidney a grocer’s assistant. Then in the 1911 census Arthur and Sidney were both grocers while Elizabth Ann was still a housekeeper.

Ten years later in the 1921 census Arthur was recorded living in High Street in Hungerford with his sister Elizabeth Ann. Arthur was a grocer and shopkeeper and Elizabeth Ann a house keeper.

Arthur died on 20 March 1924 aged 60 still living at High Street in Hungerford and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 April. Arthur left a will and administration of his estate was granted on 21 May 1924 at Oxford to his sister Elizabeth Ann Higgs. The value of the estate was £1,848 8s 6d.

Arthur’s parents Thomas and Mary Higgs were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 23 June 1887 and 7 December 1887 respectively. Also, eight of his siblings were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery. They were Frederick, John, Walter, Brice Edward, William Henry, Herbert, Thomas Farr and Elizabeth Ann who were buried on 10 January 1893, 23 December 1902, 29 November 1904, 15 April 1913, 25 June 1913, 8 January 1915, 10 July 1919 and 1 February 1936 respectively.
