George New was born in Newbury to William and Hannah New in 1840. William was born in Mildenhall, Wilts but married Hannah Wild in Dec.1838 in Newbury, he was a miller. In 1841 they were living in Back Lane. By 1851 they had moved to Plummers Yard, West Mills. George now had two brothers James (4yrs.) and Isaac (8yrs) and a sister Elisabeth (6yrs.).
In 1861 he was living in Bartholomew Street with James Stillman who was a Grocer and Provision Dealer employing two men. One of these men was George New described as a servant but his occupation was a Grocer’s Assistant.
He married Ellen Clements in Dec 1862 in Newbury. In the 1871 census they were living in Bartholomew Street. George was now a Baker. His mother-in-law was living with them aged 75yrs. and was described as senseless. They had two sons, William George (7yrs) and Henry Clements (1yr) and had a 16yr. old servant Annie Attewell.
By 1881 George was a Baker and Corn Dealer employing three men. His son William George was a Baker and Corn Dealer’s Assistant, Henry was a scholar and there was another son Frederick D (9yrs) also a scholar. They had different servant Mary Jane Blake aged 15yrs. and described as a General Domestic Servant from Little London. Hants.
On the 1891 census they were living at 27 Bartholomew Street. Frederick was still at home , a Corn Dealer’s Assistant. Their General Domestic Servant was now Ada Crook aged 16yrs. from Woolwich, Kent.
George died in 1898 just after they moved to Brook Villa, Thatcham.. Ellen died in Sept 1911 and they are both buried in Newtown Road Cemetery.
