The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. Thomas David Quarterman at 8 Bartholomew-terrace, Pound-street Born at Oxford 63 years ago, deceased was the son of Mr. David Quarterman, a sergeant in the Oxfordshire Constabulary, and Quarterman followed in his father's footsteps by joining the force. He later left the Oxfordshire Police, and in 1884 entered the Berkshire Constabulary. He was first stationed at Bucklebury, and was subsequently moved to Chaddleworth, Hungerford, Uffington and then finally to Newbury.

He retired from the force in 1913 as a police-constable, but rejoined in 1915, and served until 1919. In addition he was retained on the police reserve until the time of his death. His family has done signal service on behalf of its country. His father was an old soldier of distinction, while had three sons who served in the Great War, two of whom were killed-Claude was invalided home in 1917; Cecil of the R.G.A., a sergeant and educational instructor, died in 1920 of wounds received at Hill 60 in 1917. During the first few weeks of the war he volunteered for a secret commission on a French submarine. Percy Harold, the youngest son, was killed in October 1917. Mr. Quarterman and his wife, who is still living, made five visits to Ypres to see the grave of their son. [Mr. Quarterman] and his wife had lately made a lengthy visit to their daughter in Cornwall, and only returned last week on account of his illness. A son and two daughters are still living.

The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday), the service which was held at the Parish Church, being conducted by the Rector (Rev. L.R. Majendie). Many policemen were in the church to pay a late tribute to an old comrade. The coffin was borne by six police-constables, P. C.s Hubbard, Robey, Poulter, Bates, Alexander and Cordery, while policemen lined the church-yard and marched at the head to the Newtown-road Cemetery, where deceased was buried.

The mourners were Mrs Quarterman (widow), Mr. Claude Quarterman (son), Miss Grace Quarterman (daughter), and Mr. Prosser.

Amongst those present were Mr. W. R. Pettifer, Supt. Simmons and Inspector Barr, Sergeants Wheeler, Hill and Robbins, P. C.s Hickman Sherwood, Kibble, Wicks and Bushnell. Floral tributes were sent by Mrs. Quarterman and daughters; Mr. C. Quarterman; Kathleen and Margy (grand daughters);Commander Lacey, R.N. (Portsmouth); Chief Constable, Officers and Constables of the Berkshire Constabulary with deepest sympathy; Mr. and Mrs. Ninnes and Evangeline (St Ives, Cornwall); Miss Cameron; Mrs. Povey; Mr. and Mr. Eastgate; Mr. Prosser and Nurse Eggleton.
