Edwin Butler (1836 – 1927)
Ellen Butler (1841 – 1889)
Edwin Butler was born circa 1836 at New Shoreham in Sussex. He was recorded with his mother Eliza and brother William at 109 Limekiln Street, Dover in Kent in the 1851 census, Edwin was a painter. Eliza was recorded as the wife of a boatman, her husband was not at home on the night of the census. Ten years later in the 1861 census Edwin was recorded as a boarder in Lowdham in Nottinghamshire and his occupation was an inland revenue officer revenue.
Ellen Chowles was born in 1841 in Shaw cum Donnington, the daughter of Charles and Ann, nee Norris, Chowles. In the 1861 census Ellen was living with her parents in Oxford Road in Shaw, Charles was a carpenter and Ellen’s occupation was recorded as plain needle work.
Edwin married Ellen in 1870 at St Thomas a Beckett, Widcombe in Bath.
In the 1871 census Edwin and Ellen were recorded living at Elm Villa in Stroud Green with Edwin recorded as an excise officer. Then a few months after the census on 27 June 1871 a daughter Edith Dora was born followed by Lillian Ellen on 7 August 1874.
In the 1881 census Edwin and Ellen and daughters were recorded living at 10 Hyde Road in Birmingham with Edwin recorded as an inland revenue officer excise. Then just over two months after the census Ellen’s father died on 3 June 1881 at 21 Hyde Road, he had been recorded in Newbury in the 1881 census.
Ellen died 26 October 1889 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 November 1889.
Two years later in the 1891 census Edwin was living in Donnington with daughter Edith Dora and he was recorded as inland revenue officer. Then in 1901 Edwin and his two daughters were living at 2 St John’s Villa in Newbury. Edwin was now a retired inland revenue officer first class.
By 1906 Edwin was recorded as living at 171 Stephen Road in Tunbridge Wells in Kent. He was recorded at 171 Stephen Road in both the 1911 and 1921 censuses, along with both daughters who had no occupations but carried out domestic duties.
Edwin died 7 April 1927 while living at Hill Crest in Donnington. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 12 April 1927. He left a will and probate was granted on 24 May 1927 at Oxford to his daughter Edith Dora and Lillian Ellen. The value of the estate was £10,268 7s 2d.
An announcement appeared in the Kent and Sussex Courier dated 15 April 1927 as below.
BUTLER – April 7th at “Hill Crest”, Donnington, Newbury, Edwin Butler retired Inland Revenue, late of 171 Stephen Road, in his 92nd year.
Edith and Lillian continued to love at Hill Crest and they were both recorded at this address in September 1939 when the national register was compiled.
Edith died 12 February 1956 while still living at Hill Crest and was buried at St Mary the Virgin at Shaw cum Donnington on 16 February.
Lillian died 22 October 1961 while living at 36 Talbot Avenue in Bournemouth.
