Transciption: | Jane Sangwell (1826 – 1894)
Jane Hoare was born circa 1826 in Crondall in Hampshire. She was baptized 25 December 1826 at All Saints in Crondall, daughter of John & Elizabeth. In the 1841 census Jane was recorded with her parents & brother John living in Crondall. In the 1851 census Jane was living as a servant at West Street in Farnham in Surrey & recorded as a house servant. At the moment no trace in 1861 census. Jane married James Sangwell on 28 October 1866 at St Peter in Brimpton. She was recorded as a spinster aged 40 living in Brimpton with no occupation & father John. James was a widower aged 48, his first wife had died in January 1864. It appears James was a keen gardener as he won various prizes at the Cottagers show in Midgham between 1861 & 1865 for his allotment & also for his onions. In the 1871 census James & Jane with two children from James’s first marriage were living at Hyde End in Brimpton with James recorded as an agricultural labourer. James & Jane were still living at Hyde End in the 1881 census, although by then living by themselves. James died 14 January 1885 and an announcement appeared in the Berkshire Chronicle on 24 January 1885 which stated James died at Hyde End after a short illness. He was buried 19 January 1885 at St Peter in Brimpton. In the 1891 census Jane was living by herself at Hyde End in Brimpton & her occupation was recorded as a char woman. Jane died 9 March 1894 at the Union Workhouse in Newbury and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery.
