George Crosswell    c1819-1887

George Duckett was born in Hampshire the illegitimate son of Ann Duckett, he was baptised on the 21st February 1819 in Kingsclere Hampshire. His mother Ann married John Crosswell (surname recorded as Crasswell) on the 29th May 1819 in Kingsclere. (It’s not known if John was George’s biological father but George was known as George Crosswell after the marriage).

George’s mother Ann was baptised on the 25th April 1798 in Kingsclere the daughter of Richard and Winifred Duckett (nee Webb) who were married on the 24th March 1790 in Kingsclere.

John Crosswell was baptised on the 11th June 1790 at St Nicolas Church Newbury Berkshire the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Crossswell (nee Mills) who were married on the 31st May 1784 at St Nicolas Church Newbury

By 1822 John, Ann and George were living in Newbury.

John and Ann had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury, John was recorded as a Flax Dresser on all of the children’s baptism records:

Martha baptised 17th March 1822 (died aged 6 in 1828 buried on the 27th February at St Nicolas Newbury)

Thomas baptised 28th March 1826

Ann Maria baptised 9th November 1828

Edward baptised 12th September 1830 (died aged 2+ in 1833 buried on the 22nd February at St Nicolas Newbury)

Charlotte baptised 10th August 1834

Emma baptised 4th December 1836

Both of George’s parents died in 1840, they were buried at St Nicolas Newbury. Ann died aged 44 she was buried on the 24th August. John died aged 50 he was buried on the 11th November.

George married in 1859.

George signed his name, Eliza made her mark

Eliza already had two daughters before she married George. Sarah Jane (Newberry) was born in 1849 and Jemima (Newbury) was born in 1852, both were born in Newbury.

George and Eliza had the following six children:

John born 1859 (died aged 5 months buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd January 1860)

William Frederick born 1862 (died aged 1 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th September 1863)

 George Thomas born c1865

Anna Maria born 1867 (died aged 22 in 1888 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th May)

Walter Henry born 1869 (died aged 2 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery (as Walter) on the 10th May 1871)

Albert Ernest born 1871 (died aged 5 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd November 1876)

 

The 1861 census records George ((42), as a General Labourer, Eliza (32), Sarah (12) and Jemima (9), living in Robeson’s Yard, Newbury. Both girls were recorded with the surname Crosswell.

In 1871 George (53), a Labourer, Eliza (43), Sarah (22), a Servant, Jemima (19), a Servant, (recorded as Jane on ancestry), George (6), Anna (7) (recorded as Hannah M on ancestry) and Walter (1) were living in Dredges Yard, Newbury.

Eliza died aged 51 in 1880, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th November.

The 1881 census records George (63) as a General Labourer/Pauper in the Newbury Workhouse.

 He died aged 69 on the 19th October 1887 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd October.
