William Vince

1846-1926

William was born on the 5^th August 1846, he was baptised on the 13^th September 1846 at the Clapham Congregational Church, Lambeth, the son of Christmas Latten and Mary Ann Vince (nee Haywood/Hayward) who were married on the 28^th September 1836 in Wilton, Norfolk.

His father Christmas Latin Vince was a Gardener. He was baptised on the 13^th January 1805 in West Dereham, Norfolk, the son of Christmas and Anne Vince (nee Latten) who were married on the 10^th June 1800 in Stoke Ferry, Norfolk. He died aged 48 in 1853 and was buried on the 11^th April at Holy Trinity, Clapham.

His mother Mary Ann Hayward was born on the 26^th February 1806, she was baptised on the 13^th July 1806 in West Wickham, Cambridgeshire, the daughter of Samuel and Ann Hayward (nee Bayles) who were married on the 31^st May 1804 in West Wickham, Cambridgeshire. She died in 1889 in London.

Christmas and Mary Ann also had the following children:

Jane Hayward born 6^th September 1837, baptised 24^th September at West Wickham (died aged 7 in 1844, buried 27^th December at Holy Trinity, Clapham)

Marianne (later known as Mary Ann) born 28^th February 1839, baptised 24^th March 1839 at Holy Trinity, Clapham,

John born 24^th October 1840, baptised 15^th November at Holy Trinity, Clapham

Robert Thomas born 1^st June 1843, baptised 20^th August at Holy Trinity, Clapham

In 1851 William (5) was visiting his uncle and aunt, Richard and Hetty Wirght at Red Lion, Grantchester, Cambridgeshire.

The 1871 census records William (25) as a Draper’s Assistant, boarding in Hill Street, Saffron Walden, Essex.

The 1881 census records him as a Butcher, aged 34, living at 13, Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham with a Housekeeper.

(Matilda Ann Pratt was born on the 18^th April 1834, she was baptised on the 24^th August 1834 at St John, Hoxton, Hackney, the daughter of William and Matilda Ann Pratt of Wellington Street. Matilda married Samuel Checkley on the 16^th October 1859 at Trinity Church, St Marylebone, Middlesex. Samuel died aged 46 in 1877 in Islington.)

The 1891 census records William (45) as a General Draper living at 6 and 7 Northbrook Street, Newbury with Matilda (50), his niece Kate Vince (20), his business partner, widower, George Payne (35), a General Draper and his sons Albert G Payne (9) and Leopold Payne (8), a Dressmaker, a Draper’s Assistant and a Milliner.

By 1901 William (54) had retired. He was living at 82 Hartfield Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire with Matilda (64). The were still living at this address when the 1911 census was taken.

Matilda died aged 79 on the 13^th October 1917, at “Walpole” St Lukes-road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, whilst on a visit. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17^th October. (Her burial record records her abode at death as Queens Road, Newbury, her probate record records her address as “Rosedale” Priory-road, Newbury).

Later William moved to 25 Pound Street, Newbury, where he died aged 80, on the 23^rd November 1926. He was laid to rest with Matilda, in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27^th November.
