Thomas Hazell
c1833-1884
Thomas was born in Burghfield Berkshire, he was baptised on the 5th July 1833 at St Michael, Tilehurst, the son of George (a Yeoman) and Charlotte Hazell (nee Larkcom) who were married on the 3rd June 1829 at St Mary, Bucklebury. George was from the parish of Burghfield.
George and Charlotte also had the following two children:
William George born 5th December 1831, baptised 11th January 1832 in Burghfield (father recorded as a Farmer)
Fanny Charlotte born 5th June, baptised 5th July 1837 in Burghfield (father recorded as a Yeoman)
The 1851 census records Thomas (17) as an Apprentice, (for a Thomas Fidler, Druggist/Grocer/Fellmonger) at 2and 3 Northbrook Street, Newbury.
Thomas married Phoebe Smith on the 4th October 1857 at St Dunston in the West, London.
(Phoebe was bornc1839 in Shaw, Berkshire).
Thomas and Phoebe had the following children:
Fanny Charlotte 1858 (died aged 4, buried 5th March in 1862 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen)

Caroline Rosa 1863
Edna Mary c1866
A male child 1867
Phoebe 1869

In 1861 Thomas (27), a Grocer’s Assistant, Phoebe (21), and their daughter Fanny (3), were living in Speen, Berkshire.
By 1871 the family were living in Shaw-cum-Donnington, Berkshire. Thomas was working as a Tea Dealer.
The 1881 census records Thomas (48) as an Assistant Overseer, living in Shaw-cum-Donnington with his wife and children.
Thomas died aged 51 on the 3rd April 1884, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th April. (Recorded as Charles Hazell aged 50 in the burial register)
Phoebe (52) was recorded in the 1891 census, living in Love Lane, Shaw-cum-Donnington, Newbury with her children Tom (29), Caroline (27), Sarah (19), Agnes (17) and Elsie (12).
The 1901 census records Phoebe (62) living at The Elms, Shaw-cum-Donnington. Also recorded living with her were her daughter Agnes (27), her granddaughter Florence E Hazell (10) (daughter of Tom William Hazell and his late wife Catherine Ann (nee Collier)) and a boarder, Albert E Pyke (25).
Phoebe died aged 66 in 1904, she was laid to rest on the 22nd December at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw-cum-Donnington.
Probate: HAZELL Thomas Personal Estate £146 1s 0d 9 July. The Will with Codicil of Thomas Hazell late of Shaw-cum-Donnington in the County of Berks Rate Collector Tea Dealer and Cowkeeper who died 3rd April 1884 at Shaw-cum-Donnington was proved at Oxford by Thomas William Hazell Dairyman the Son and Phebe Hazell Widow the Relict both of Shaw-cum-Donnington the Executors.
