Elizabeth Elkins
She was born c.1819 in Newbury, daughter of Manasseh James and his first wife Mary (nee Brown). Her father was a Maltster and Corn Dealer in Northbrook Street and an enthusiast/teacher of mathematics and astronomy. He was a member of the Town Council and a Trustee of the Municipal Charity Estates. He died in 1855 and is buried in the Newbury Cemetery. In the 1851 Census she is a Dressmaker living with her father, now retired, at Bartholomew Terrace. At the beginning of 1861 she married, as his second wife, John Elkins, a Currier of Bartholomew Street. In the 1861 Census John’s niece, Amelia Jane Long, aged 18, is residing with them. By the 1871 Census they have retired to 3 Donnington Square. After her husband’s death in 1873, she moved to Carnarvon Terrace where she died in August 1883, aged 64 years. She was buried on 21 August 1883.
