Recorder's Notes Harriet Giles married Joseph Sargent in 1829. They had a son, Edward (see below), in 1831 & daughter, Sarah, in 1837. Harriett was widowed in 1839. They were living at 110, Northbrook St, Newbury in the 1841 census. Harriett was working as a seamstress at 38, Jack Lane off Northbrook St by 1851, but by 1861 had move in with her daughter Sarah & husband who ran the Public House & Grocery in Wantage Rd, Winterbourne. In following census records, after Sarah's death, she moved to the Almshouses in West Mills. Cont'd below...... Edward and family are buried with his mother, Harriet, above. Before marriage, Edward lived with his Uncle Benjamin Sargent, a bricklayer in Camberwell & followed the same trade. He married Peasemore girl, Sophia (maiden name not found) in 1853 & they lived in Shoreditch where two of their 3 children were born. Edward briefly returned to Newbury where his daughter was born, living at Jack o'Newbury cafe in Jack St.(1861) & working as a beer seller as well as a bricklayer. The family was again living in Shoreditch by the 1871 census with Edward working as a bricklayer. They had moved back to Newbury by 1881 to 1, Northcroft Terrace, Northcroft Lane with Edward employing 4 men. His son, also a bricklayer, lived next door in no. 2 after he married Fanny Dore. By Sophia's death in 1899 she & Edward senior had moved to The Hollies, 47, Greenham Rd where Edward also died, leaving £860 to his son, Edward, a builder. Harriett lived with her parents until their deaths, after which she is found living on her own means and doing domestic help at Raymonds Cottages (almshouses, Newtown Rd.) She died at the Infirmary, 214 Newtown Rd & was buried with her parents & Grandmother. Benjamin Sargent, cousin to Edward, is also buried in a family tomb in NRC (location not recorded) Benjamin became the Borough Surveyor for Newbury (see Obit in NRC Bur Recds.)
