Joseph Limpus
c1803-1883
According to census records Joseph was born in either Hounslow or Isleworth, Middlesex. He was an Ostler.
The 1841 census records Joseph (35) (no occupation recorded) living in the Broadway, Speenhamland with Sarah (75) a Washerwoman and Henry (20). (Presumably his mother and brother. (Family surname recorded as Simpers on ancestry))
Joseph married Elizabeth Legg (nee Champ) in 1857 (marriage registered in Newbury).
(Elizabeth was baptised on the 16th February 1812 at St Mary, Greenham, Berkshire the daughter of Stephen and Rachel Champ (formerly Stone, nee Farmer) who were married on the 29th June 1807 at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire. Her 1st husband was John Legg, a Shoemaker (born c1802 in Newbury), they were married on the 1st January 1836 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. They had 4 children, Maria c1836, William 1837, Mary 1840 and Hannah 1849.)
In 1861 Joseph (56) and Elizabeth (60) were recorded living in Kimber’s Yard, Newbury.
Elizabeth Limpus died aged 56 in 1867 (death registered in Camberwell).
In both the 1871 and 1881 census records Joseph was recorded as a Pauper/Inmate in the Newbury Workhouse.
He died on the 28th January 1883 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st January.
