Martha Pike/Pyke

c1816-1882

Martha was baptised on the 28th April 1816, in Denchworth, Berkshire, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Keep (nee Saunders) who were married on the 4th November 1805, in West Hendred, Berkshire.

Edward and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised in Denchworth.

Elizabeth, 30th November 1806

Thomas, 25th December 1807

Edward, 18th December 1808

Charles, 15th April 1810

Susannah, 30th June 1811

Rebecca, 18th December 1812

Mary, 19th June 1814

Sarah, 29th December 1822

 

In 1841 Martha was working as a Servant, in Inkpen, Berkshire.

 

Martha married in 1857

Marriage details:

Place: St John the Baptist, New Windsor, Berkshire

Date: 13th August 1857

Groom: William Pike, full age, bachelor, occupation, Private, (Army) abode, Cavalry Barracks

Bride: Martha Keep, full age, spinster, abode, Victoria Street

Fathers: Charles Pike, a Labourer and Edward Keep, a Farmer

Witnesses: William Stevenson and Gwetta Batterbury

(William was baptised on the 1st November 1829, in Taplow, Buckinghamshire, the son of Charles and Sophia Pike (nee Elliot). who were married on the 22nd November 1824, in Taplow. William joined the Army in August 1849, (Horse Guards Regiment)  

The 1861 census record William (30), a Soldier, and Martha (38), living in Albany Place, Marylebone, Middlesex

In 1871 William (41), a Pensioner and Martha (46), living in York Terrace, Reading, Berkshire.

The 1881 census records William (50), an Army Pensioner and Martha (58), living in Waterloo Place, Newbury.

Martha Pyke died aged 64, on the 24th November 1882, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th November.

On the 23rd December 1882 William was admitted to the Moulsford Lunatic Asylum, Cholsey, Wallingford, Berkshire. He died on the 5th March 1895 in the Lunatic Asylum and was buried on the 9th March. (Cause of death, heart disease and cerebral softening, age at death recorded as 70)
