Transciption: | THE LATE MR. HENRY SEYMOUR
The funeral of this deceased gentleman, who died on Thursday last at Shaw-crescent, took place yesterday at Newbury cemetery. Mr. Seymour was for many years in business in Marlborough, where he was mayor of the borough. He was also a Justice of the Peace, an alderman, and churchwarden, and indeed filled almost every public office that it was competent for a townsman to fill,
Upon his retirement from business 16 or 17 years ago, he returned to his native town of Newbury, where he spent his remaining days, having lived nearly to his 86th birthday, being in this respect like other members of his family who are somewhat remarkable for their longevity. NWN 4 MAY 1882 |

Henry Seymour
He was born on 10 July 1796 in the parish of Speen and baptised on 30 March 1798 in the Newbury Upper Meeting House (Presbyterian). His parents were Henry and Sarah Seymour (nee Betteridge). No trace yet of his marriage to Sarah but by 1841 he was living, aged 44, in The Green, Marlborough with his wife Sarah, his daughters Sarah (age 14), Catherine Brunsdon (age 9) and Emily (age 5); his occupation was Tallow Chandler and employer. The business is recorded in the 1830 Pigot's Directory, 1839 Robson's Directory and the 1842 Pigot's Directory operating in the Marsh. In 1843 he was elected a Guardian of the Marlborough Union. In 1851 he had moved to the High Street.
On 9 November 1855 he was unanimously elected Mayor of Marlborough. In September 1858 his youngest daughter Emily married William George Adey, a member of the well-known Newbury family of timber merchants and builders, and who became Mayor of Newbury in 1874 and 1875. Catherine married a Wentworth and died in 1904. In 1861, Henry and Sarah were still living in the High Street (variously Candle Maker/Employer/Town Councillor) and at some point they moved to Newbury. His wife Sarah died at 2 Enborne Villas on 26 July 1870 aged 74 years and in 1871 he was living, by now retired, at 10 Shaw Crescent where he died aged 85 years on 27 April 1882. He was buried on 3 May 1882 in the same vault as his wife Sarah. Probate was granted to his nephew Henry Seymour, Wine Merchant of Broadway. Speenhamland. His nephew Henry was the son of his brother James Betteridge Seymour, Draper at 14 Bartholomew Street (1794-1871). There were four brothers: Edmund Seymour, Saddler and Harness Maker, Broadway, Speenhamland (1798-1875); George Seymour (1799-1822); James Betteridge Seymour (1794-1871) and Henry Seymour (1796 - 1882)
