THE LATE MRS. JOHN HOPSON
The death occurred on Monday of Mrs. Maria Hopson, of Westwood, Newtown-road, at the great age of 98. She was the daughter of Mr. Joshua Higgs, of Davies-street, London, W. and of Cold Ash, Newbury. He was a member of the family of well-known London builders, of which the firms of Higgs and Hill Ltd. And F. and F. H. Higgs Ltd. are the present representatives. Mr. Joshua Higgs was himself well-known, as a builder of churches. His daughter, the lady just deceased, inherited his ability, and was of great assistance to her husband, who succeeded at a very early age to his father's business.
Mrs. Hopson had been an invalid for many years, but during her early life was a woman of great activity. She was greatly interested in religious and social work, and for a long period she and Mr. Hopson conducted the infant class of the Sunday School attached to the Congregational Church. So successful were they at this work that the class seldom contained less than a hundred children. The devotion they gave to this work bears fruit even to-day, for there is still a large and vigorous class which has contributed largely to the success of the senior school.
The funeral takes place to-day (Thursday) at 2.20 pm. in the family vault at the Old Cemetery.
