Richard Geater
c1843-1881
Richard was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Lawrence and Mary Ann Geater, who were married on the 19th March 1842, at St Nicolas, Newbury. (Both were widowed)
His father Lawrence was baptised on the 14th September 1788, in Kintbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Mary Geater (nee Langfield) who were married on the 10th October 1787, in Kintbury. (Lawrence married Mary Blackman on the 29th July 1811, in East Woodhay, Hampshire. (Both were from Newbury). They had 9 children, John, c1812, Elizabeth, c1814, William, c1816, Ann, c1818, twins, George and Thomas, 1820, Charles, 1822, David, c1826 and Joseph, c1830. Lawrence was widowed in 1841)
Richard’s mother Mary Ann was born on the 5th March 1803. She was baptised on the 27th March 1803, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Samuells.
The 1851 census records Richard Gaiter (8), his father Lawrence (64), a Bricklayer and his mother Mary Ann (48), living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury.
In 1861 Richard Gater (18) was working as a General Labourer. He was still living at home (Old Newtown Road) with his parents, Lawrence (75), a Hay Cutter and Mary Ann (58).
The 1871 census records Richard (28) as a Hay Cutter, he was still living in Old Newtown Road, but was now living alone.
Richard’s mother Mary Ann died aged 69 in 1872. Her funeral service was held at St John the Evangelist Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st May.
His father Lawrence died aged 88, in 1873. His funeral service was also held at St John the Evangelist Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th March.
The 1881 census records Richard (38), as a Market Gardener, lodging at the Wellington Arms, Newbury.
Richard died aged 39, on the 25th December 1881, in the City, Newbury, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th December.
