Thomas Godding

Thomas Godding

1851-1881

 

Thomas was born in Speen Berkshire the son of Francis and Caroline Godding (nee Coward) who married on the 25thAugust 1838 at the parish church of St Mary the Virgin Speen. Francis was a widower.

Francis was born c1796 in Boxford Berkshire. Caroline was born c1814 in Butts (Frome) Somerset

Francis and Caroline also had the following children:

Sarah Ann born 1840 in Speen

Louisa born c1842 in Speen

James born 1844 in Boxford

Clara 1848 born in Speen (died aged 12 in 1859)

 

In 1841 Francis (45), Caroline (25) and Sarah Ann (1) were living in Lambourn Road Speen Berkshire. Francis was working as a Shoemaker.

The 1851 census records Francis (56) as a Shoemaker living in Stockcross Berkshire with Caroline (37), Sarah (10), Louisa (8), James (6) and Clara (2).

Thomas’s mother Caroline died aged 39 in 1853 in Stockcross.

His sister Clara died age 12 in 1859 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th July

In 1861 Thomas (9) was recorded living in Jack of Newbury Street Newbury with his father Francis (65) his brother James (16), both were a Leather Boot Lace Makers.

Thomas’s father Francis died aged 74 on the 3rd February 1870 at Staples’ Yard Newbury he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th February (recorded as Thomas Godding in the burial records)

Like his father and brother James, Thomas was also a Boot Lace Maker. In 1871 he was visiting at the Greyhound Inn Bartholomew Street Newbury, the home of his future wife Emma Elizabeth Beauchamp, Emma’s father was the Licensed Victualler.

Thomas married Emma in 1871.

Bride: Emma Elizabeth Beauchamp, full age, spinster, abode: Newbury

Fathers: Francis Godding, occupation: Lace Maker and John William Beauchamp, occupation: Inkeeper

Witnesses: Walter Willis and Ellen ?

 

Thomas and Emma had the following children:

Edith Alice c1872 (died aged 12 in 1883)

Louisa c1874

John Francis (died aged 5 in 1881)

James 1877

Emily 1882

In 1881 Thomas (30), Emma (30), Edith Alice (9), Louisa (7), John Francis (5) and James (3), were living in Milton Court Newbury.

John Francis died aged 5 in 1881 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the30th April (as Francis John)

Thomas died aged 32 in 1881 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th December.

Edith Alice died aged 12 in 1883 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the29th August
