BATH – Feb. 21st, at Finchley, Hilda Agnes, beloved wife of Bernard Bath, and daughter of Mrs. Freemantle and the late W. C. Freemantle of Newbury, passed away after a short illness. Funeral at Baptist Church, Northbrook-street, on Thursday, Feb. 25th at 1.30 pm

Hilda Agnes was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William Chamberlian and Louisa Kate Freemantle (nee Abbotts) who were married in 1886 (marriage registered in the June quarter, in Newbury)

Hilda’s mother Louisa Kate was born in Banbury Oxfordshire, she was baptised on the 2nd July 1858 in Banbury, the daughter of Thomas and Louisa Abbotts (nee Falkner) who were married on the 28th July 1857, in South Newington, Oxford.

Her father William was born in Sydmonton, Hampshire, he was baptised on the 18th April 1851, in Litchfield, Hampshire, the son of George and Ann(e) Dulcibella Freemantle (nee Chamberlain) who were married on the 12th February 1850, in Whitchurch, Hampshire.

Hilda’s siblings were:

Ethel Louisa Ellen, born 1887 (died of pneumonia aged 17 on the 5th November 1904, in Hastings and was buried in the NRC on the 9th November)

William George, born 1889 (died aged 26, on the 4th June 1915 in Gallipoli, while serving as a Lieutenant, in the 7th Bn Manchester Regiment during the 1st World War).

The 1891 census records Hilda aged 4 months, living at 2 & 3 Northbrook Street, Newbury, with her father William (40), a Grocer and Fellmonger, her mother Louisa (32), her sister Ethel (3) and her brother William (1). Also recorded in the household was her aunt, Martha E. Abbotts, a Draper’s Assistant, two assistants and two servants. (Surname recorded as Bramante on ancestry)

In 1901 William (50) a Grocer Shopkeeper, Louisa (42), Ethel (13), William (11), Hilda (10), a visitor, William Murray (5) and a servant, were recorded living at 2 & 3 Northbrook Street.

The 1911 census records Hilda (20) and her parents still living at 2 & 3 Northbrook Street.

Hilda married Bernard Bath in 1920 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury)

(Bernard was born in 1888 in Hampstead, London, the son of John and Elizabeth Ann(e) Bath (nee Hooper) who were married in 1870 (marriage registered in Brentford)

By 1921 Bernard and Hilda were living in Finchley, Middlesex.

Hilda and Bernard had two children, Derek William, born 1922 and Jean Hilda, born in 1923.

Hilda’s father William died aged 74 on the 1st February 1925. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th February with his daughter Ethel Louisa Ellen (buried 9th November 1904).

Hilda died aged 35 on the 21st February 1926 at Claverley Nursing Home, Woodhouse Road, North Finchley. At the time of her death she was living at 41 Chandos Road, East Finchley. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th February.

Her mother Louisa died aged 76, (MI records her aged 76) on the 6th October 1933, in Salisbury, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with Hilda on the 11th October.
