Francis John/John Francis Godding
1875-1881
John Francis was born in Newbury the son of Thomas and Emma Elizabeth Godding (nee Beauchamp) who married in 1871 (marriage registered in Newbury).
His father Thomas was born 1851 in Speen the son of Francis and Caroline Godding (nee Coward) who married in Speen in 1838.
His mother Emma Elizabeth was born in Guildford Surrey on the 4th June 1850, she was baptised in Chertsey on the 18th August, the daughter of John and Emma Beauchamp (nee Baldwin) who were married on the 22nd October 1848 at St Mary, Battersea, Surrey.
Thomas and Emma Elizabeth also had the following children:

Thomas was a Boot Lace Maker. In 1871 (prior to his marriage) he was recorded as a visitor at the Greyhound Inn, Bartholomew Street, Newbury, the home of Emma Elizabeth. Emma’s father was the publican.
In 1881 Thomas (30), Emma (30), Edith Alice (9), Louisa (7), John Francis (5) and James (3) were living in Milton Court, Newbury.
Francis John died aged 5 in 1881 he was buried (as Francis John) in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th April
John’s father Thomas also died in 1881, he was 32 years old, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th December.
His sister Edith Alice died aged 12 on the 24th August 1883, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th August.
After John’s father died in 1881 his mother had two more daughters, Emily born in 1882 and Caroline born in 1884 (died aged 1 in 1886 in Southampton) both girls were born in Newbury. She went on to “marry” (no marriage found) Charles William Wheeler (a Bricklayer’s Labourer born c1862 in Newbury, son of Thomas and Emma Wheeler (nee Skinner)). They had the following children born in Southampton: Charles, 1885, Alice Kate, 1887, John, 1888, Harry, 1890 and Mabel, c1892.
In both the 1891 and 1901 census records Charles and Emma were recorded living at 22 Middle Street, Southampton.
The 1911 census records them living as boarders at 25 Upper Bugle Street Southampton.
