Richard Butler (1807 – 1881)
Richard Butler (1807 – 1881)
Richard was baptized on 19 April 1807 at St Mary the Virgin in Aldermaston, the son of Richard and Ann, nee Bond, Butler.
In the 1841 census Richard was probably living in Broad Street in Thatcham and his occupation was an agricultural labourer. Also, in the house was Mary Ann Butler aged 35 (this was rounded up to the higher 5 years) who was not born in Berkshire. Richard did have a sister Mary Ann who was in 1810 in Aldermaston so should have been recorded as aged 35 although she was born in Berkshire.
Ten years later in the 1851 census Richard was living in Broad Street in Thatcham, his occupation was an agricultural labourer and he was also recorded as married although his wife was not present.
Subsequently in the 1861 census Richard was recorded as a lodger living in Speen, his occupation was a shepherd and he was also recorded as a widower.
Richard was living by himself in Morlands Cottages in Greenham in the 1871 census, he was a cattle drover and stated to be unmarried.
Robert died 10 February 1881 in Newbury Union Workhouse and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 February.
